Zowie (ゾーイ Zōi) is the ruler of the Gravillian Empire and the main antagonist of Gitaroo Man.

Biography[]

Zowie is the official ruler of the Gravillian Empire. He is identified as a "Prince", but the whereabouts of the king and queen are not known. Zowie strives for perfection above everything else. He dreams of completely taking over Planet Gitaroo and eventually ruling the universe with the legendary gitaroo in U-1's possession. He also has a pet cat named Ming Ming. It is claimed by Gregorio III that no one has ever seen Zowie's personal gitaroo.

History[]

Zowie spends a majority of the game monitoring U-1's actions. When U-1 and Puma are near Planet Gitaroo, Zowie beams a hologram of himself to introduce himself to him. He demands the legendary Gitaroo and is disappointed when U-1 refuses.

The morning after U-1 plays the legendary theme for Kirah using the acoustic guitar, Puma is kidnapped by Zowie. While U-1 is trying to find Puma, he falls into a trap planted by Zowie which takes him to the location where the Gravillian's headquarters are. Zowie then meets U-1 in person for the first time, taunting him and showing him that he has Puma. He realizes that U-1 cannot fight without Puma, since he needs him to get his gitaroo to transform into Gitaroo Man. Zowie uses this to his advantage and orders the Sanbone Trio to attack U-1.

U-1 eventually rescues Puma, Miranda and the other imprisoned gitarians and defeats the Sanbone Trio and Gregorio Wilhelm III. U-1, now at Gitaroo Arena, Zowie appears and calls the strongest Gravillian warrior into the arena. Much to U-1's surprise, it turns out to be Kirah. After the battle, Kirah ends up betraying Zowie and realizes that her music is not for fighting. Zowie, now enraged that Kirah betrayed him, is now forced to don his own Armored gitaroo. He then insults U-1 out of anger, telling U-1 that he's "useless" and that "he'll never be able to do anything" in a fasion similar to Kazuya. He provokes U-1 so much, that he unleashes his true form. They fight each other in a final showdown, and Zowie is ultimately defeated and falls into space.

It is unknown what Zowie's status is at this point, but he most likely died due to him being attacked with the incredible power of U-1's true form and being sent into space. In the PSP port Gitaroo Man Lives!, the duet mode exclusive to the game features a stage against Zowie's cat, Ming Ming. She most likely is trying to get vengeance for Zowie, there is no storyline for these stages so it is unclear if they are canon to the main story, or if they were just meant to be extra content for the port. This could mean that Ming Ming has followed in Zowie's footsteps as the new ruler of the Gravillian Empire. Of course, she is defeated by U-1 and Kirah.

Physical Appearance[]

Zowie has big red horns and another pair of smaller yellow horns on his head. He has red eyes with longer lashes, and spiky white hair (In the conceptual artwork, he has very light brown hair). He adorns a red cape but not in the VS Play mode. He wears spiky black armor with red details. He is also somewhat muscular. He has blue nail polish on his fingers. He bears a strong resemblance to U-1's rival on earth, Kazuya, both physically and personality wise. They also have the same voice.

In his armored gitaroo, his physical appearance is dramatically different. His big horns are bigger, more crooked, and are a really dark shade of red, and his small horns are the same shade of red as the big horns of his regular form. He has no eyebrows and his eyes have no lashes and appear more menacing. His eyes are also outlined in black and the real bottom of the outline is red. His hair is also light brown instead of white. His appearance was most likely changed due to the extreme power of the armored gitaroo, which may affect him.

Trivia[]

  • In the Japanese version, Gregorio refers to the armored Zowie in the collection menu as "Zowie-sama" (ゾーイさま). In the English version, it was localized for him to refer to him as "Lord Zowie".
  • As seen in unused face textures in the game's files, Zowie has sharp vampire-like teeth.
  • In the cutscene before Stage 10, when Zowie bursts into Gitaroo Arena in the Japanese version, the crowd can be heard screaming. In the English version, they are silent.
    • In the same cutscene, when Zowie is in the armored gitaroo, his voice is altered to have a robotic effect to it in the English version, but interestingly in the stage his voice sounds normal. In the Japanese version, his voice is normal in both the cutscene and the stage.
